Taking care of your teeth at home is very important, but regular dental scale and cleans are vital in maintaining good oral health. Hard plaque known as tartar (calculus) can form above and below the gum line. This can only be removed by a dentist during a professional clean.
If left untreated, calculus build up can cause gingivitis (gum inflammation) which will then progress to periodontitis (receding gums).
- Staining
- Tartar buildup
- Gum inflammation/bleeding
- Painful gums
- Sensitive teeth
An ultrasonic scaler is used to dislodge the calculus build up. This is a fairly painless experience. However if there is discomfort a local anaesthetic can be used to help ease the discomfort if really required.
Polishing of the teeth helps with the removal of stains on the surface of the teeth from food and drinks.
A concentrated fluoride is placed on the teeth after the scale and polish to help protect the teeth from decay.
